Freeze-dried beef heart as bait for the show ring
Updated
Beef heart show bait works because the pieces are dry, not greasy and light, and they snap down to bait size by hand. Resealed, the bag rides along for a show weekend with no refrigeration, per the listing. Keep a few snapped pieces in a pocket or bait bag, offer water between classes and wash your hands.
Does freeze-dried beef heart work as show bait?
For the job bait has to do, yes. Bait for dog shows needs to sit in a pocket for hours, come out in small pieces without a mess and go back in the pocket when the class is over. The listing describes the pieces as dry and not greasy and light in a pouch, and it says they snap into smaller pieces for fast rewards. The brand's own scorecard rates training value at 5 of 5, which is its count, not ours.
What we cannot tell you is whether your dog will show for it, or what your judge thinks of bait at all. Ring procedure is the show's business, so check your show's rules before you bring any food to the ring. Our part is the bag, and the bag is simple: one ingredient, raw beef heart from a Pennsylvania farm, freeze dried in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Raw is also why you wash your hands after handling it, which we come back to below.
How small should bait pieces be?
Small, and snapped before you leave the setup. The listing describes a medium piece that breaks into smaller ones by hand, and a conformation handler wants pieces the dog can take without a pause. Break a day's worth into a small container at the grooming table, where you have a wipe and a trash can, instead of snapping at ringside with a lead in the other hand.
The listing lists the treat for puppies as well as adults and suggests snapping pieces small for a puppy, so a puppy class gets the same bag at a smaller size. For how piece size works in a training session rather than a ring, our training page goes through it.
Crumbs are part of freeze-dried anything. Keep the dust in the container and put it on dinner at the hotel; it is still beef heart.
How do you carry bait in the ring?
A pocket or a bait bag, whichever your outfit allows. Because the pieces are dry, a pocket of them does not do to a jacket what a pocket of damp bait does, and the listing's "not greasy" line is the one that matters on a show suit. Load the pocket from the container just before the class, and only what you expect to use.
Between classes, water. The bag says: "Provide fresh water at all times." A collapsible bowl at the setup covers it. The bag also says: "Always supervise your dog while feeding." At a show that is not hard, since the dog is on a lead the whole time, but it rules out leaving a loose pile of pieces in a crate while you walk to the ring.
Hands get sticky at a show for all sorts of reasons. The beef heart is not one of them, but it is still raw before freeze-drying, so wipe or wash before you go back to the lead or shake a hand.
How do you pack beef heart for a show weekend?
This is the one place the listing speaks to directly. The listing says: "Reseal the bag and it can come along for a show weekend." That is the packing instruction in full: close the bag, put it in the tack box, go. No cooler, no ice pack, nothing that has to be plugged in at the hotel.
Once the bag is open, the label's storage line travels with it. The bag says: "Close the heart bag again after opening and store it cool and dry." A tack box in the shade is closer to that than a container left in the sun.
A show weekend bait kit, then, is short:
- One bag of beef heart, resealed after each use.
- A day's pieces snapped ahead, in a small lidded container.
- A pocket or a bait bag for the ring.
- Water and a collapsible bowl at the setup.
- Hand wipes for after each class.
How does bait fit the day's treat budget?
Bait is still treats. A long show weekend with a class each morning and breed each afternoon can add up to more pieces than a normal day at home, and the bag does not change what a treat is. The bag says: "Feed as a treat or meal topper." It also says the treat is not intended as a complete diet, so dinner is still dinner.
The budget is yours to set. The calculator on our product page uses a 10 percent default on the daily calories you enter and turns that into ounces of this treat. Weigh out a day's bait to that figure before the weekend and you will not have to guess at the ring.
The listing calls the pieces light in a pouch, so freeze dried bait for the show ring adds little to a tack box or a pocket over a show weekend.
Questions
Is beef heart greasy in a bait pocket?
The listing describes the pieces as dry and not greasy, so expect dust rather than oil. Crumbs still happen when pieces ride against a seam. Turn the pocket out at the setup and shake it into the dog's bowl.
Do I need a cooler at a show?
No. The listing calls the heart shelf stable and says it needs no refrigeration, and it names a show weekend itself. Once the bag is open the label asks you to close it and keep it cool and dry, so it lives in the tack box rather than in the sun.
Which bag size suits a show weekend?
The bag comes in 1.5, 3 and 6 ounces, and the label does not rank them. A 1.5 ounce bag fits a jacket pocket. If you show a string of dogs, a 3 or 6 ounce bag at the setup, decanted into a container each morning, saves opening and closing a small bag all day.
Will it leave a smell on show clothes?
The listing says the smell is milder than liver, and we will not promise more than that. It is a beef treat, so a pocket of it will smell like a pocket of beef treat, only less so than liver bait would. Our page on whether freeze-dried beef heart smells covers pockets and hands in more detail.
Can I bait a puppy in the ring with it?
The listing lists the treat for adults and puppies, and tells you to snap pieces down small for a puppy. Puppy classes have their own rules at every show, so check your show's rules first. A smaller piece is also the listing's own advice for a puppy.
Can I offer bait to another handler's dog?
Ask the handler first, every time. Some dogs are on a diet their vet set, and some handlers keep one bait for the ring on purpose. If they say yes, the ingredient list has one entry, beef heart, which makes the question easy to answer. Wash or wipe your hands before you go back to your own dog.
